How to update the IP address of the SCAN VIP on Oracle RAC 12c on ODA X5-2HA

I have an opportunity to change the SCAN VIP on Oracle RAC 12c running on Oracle Database Appliance X5-2 HA.

Please note here i'm changing only IP address. if Subnet is also need to change there will be more steps.

The IP addresses associated with the SCAN VIP resources are initially configured in DNS server when the SCAN resources are created. 
Any changes to the DNS entry for the SCAN are not automatically propagated to the clusterware and need to be done manually. 

Before the SCAN VIPs can be changed, the entry for the SCAN name on the Domain Name Server (DNS) needs to be updated with the new IP addresses.


check the current setting. This output should  reflect the new IP address, which is updated in DNS server. 
all commands being executed from Grid Home as root user. 

nslookup abc-scan

check the current IP address(es) of the SCAN VIPs
srvctl config scan



Stop the SCAN listeners and SCAN.
refresh the SCAN VIPs with the new IP addresses from the DNS entry using the modify command.
srvctl stop scan_listener 
srvctl stop scan
srvctl modify scan -n abc-scan

check if the SCAN VIPs have been changed,
srvctl config scan




 Restart SCAN & SCAN listener:
srvctl start scan 


srvctl start scan_listener


Update the SCAN listener as well.
srvctl modify scan_listener -u

ODA End user deployment with GUI

This doc will provide step to step procedure of End User Deployment on ODA X5-2 HA.

After deploy the ODA_BASE we need to deploy the final End user deployment to complete the installation of ODA.

End User Image (End-User RDBMS Clone files)  can be downloaded from MOS note 888888.1



Initiate the configurator using the following command

#/opt/oracle/oak/bin/oakcli deploy

deploy command launches a welcome screen.Click on Next.


Select the Configuration type,Hardware and Environment (virtualization or Bare Metal). if offline configurator has already been ran then the configuration file can be browse here.

Enter the system name,region ,timezone and password.

Enter the Domain name,DNS ips,Public,VIP and Scan ip's and host names as well.

Click on create database and enter the required info to configure the database.

Validate the network. In my case it was offline so i skip it.


Review the configuration information, if this is offline configurator then click on save and copy the configuration file to the ODA. if your running from ODA itself then click on Finish. it will take approx 2 hours to complete.

Deploy ODA_BASE on Oracle Database Appliance


This doc will describe the procedure to deploy the ODA_BASE on Oracle Database Appliance.

In my case i deployed on ODA X5-2 HA.




 1)  Once the network is setup, you have initial public network setup.  Please copy the template files to /OVS on dom0 1st node (Node 0).

2)    Download “p16186172_121290_Linux-x86-64_1of2.zip” and “p16186172_121290_Linux-x86-64_2of2.zip” from MOS Patch# 16186172. 

3)    scp or use winscp to copy the  both files to oak1-dom0 to /OVS

4)    unzip p16186172_121290_Linux-x86-64_1of2.zip

5)    unzip p16186172_121290_Linux-x86-64_2of2.zip

6)    This will create two files:  oda_base_12.1.2.9.gz01 and oda_base_12.1.2.9.gz02

7)    Concatenate the above two files using the cat command. 

cat oda_base_12.1.2.9.gz01 oda_base_12.1.2.9.gz02 > oda_base_12.1.2.9.tar.gz. This file name needs to be entered in the prompt in next step

8)    From Node0 (sc0, oak1-dom0), deploy oda_base by executing “/opt/oracle/oak/bin/oakcli deploy oda_base” as rootRespond to prompts “Enter the template location:” with the absolute path i.e “/OVS/oda_base_12.1.2.9.tar.gz”



-Choosing number of cores (for example 6)  means licensing number of  Cores (6 cores ) on each node. 
-Choose memory as needed for the ODA_BASE. This is the memory that is used for the Database so ensure an appropriate value is chosen.

Once the above process completes, the ODA_BASE domain is started, this can be checked by running oakcli command #oakcli show oda_base


ODA_BASE deployment is completed now. next step is to start the  deployment. i will cover this in next post.

Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) High Availability (HA) Re-image/Restore procedure.

ODA comes bare metal pre-installed with Oracle Linux and Appliance manager.

If customer require, ODA can be re-imaged or restored with Oracle VM (Virtualization) or Bare Metal.
This doc provides step to step procedure to re-image the ODA X5-2 with Virtualized Platform.

ODA OS ISO Image / Bare Metal - Virtualized Platform images can be downloaded from MOS note 888888.1

Download OS ISO image from Patch 16186163

Unzip p16186163_121290_Linux-x86-64.zip

Re-image/ Restore can be initialize from ILOM.

1.    Connect to ILOM from the Browser and login as root.
2.    On left, Navigation pane click on remote control then Redirection then click on Launch Remote Console.




     Once console is there. Click on KVMS then storage.

1      New windows will be open. Click on Add.

5.       Select the downloaded OS ISO (Bare Matel or Virtualize)  from your laptop.

5       In Storage Devices windows you will see the attached ISO image. Select the ISO and click on connect.

5.       Once ISO is connected. Click on Ok.



5.       Once ISO is attached. You will see the screen like below. 

 Goto Navigation pane, Click on Host Control then select CDROM Next Boot Device.


5.       Click on Power Control and select Power Cycle and save. ODA server will boot from CDROM ISO.


5.       Once its boot from CDROM ISO. You will see screen like below. System is booting from ISO now.
It will take around 30 mins to install the Operating System. Do it from both ODA servers.

5.       Once Installation is done. You will see the screen like below. Check the Local hostname should be oak1 and oak2 on node 0 and node 1 respectively. If you find Local hostname is different reboot the server one more time. Press Alt+F2 to login with user root and password welcome1.


5.       Execute xm list. You will see the dom0. 


5.       Execute oakcli show env_hw to verify the virtualized platform. With this step Re-image/ Restore has done. 



      Once Re-image/Restore is done. Assign the IP’s and hostname to the both database servers.
Execute the oakcli configure firstnet
1.       Choose global to assign the IP’s and hostname on both nodes.
2.       Enter the domain name.
3.       Enter the DNS server IP.
4.       Enter the secondary IP for DNS if any or leave blank.
5.       Enter hostname for both nodes.
6.       Choose network interface like net1
7.       For DHCP type NO.
8.       Enter IP’s for both nodes.
9.       Enter netmask IP.
10.   Enter Gateway IP.



With this step ODA re-image/restore procedure is completed.

In my next blog i will explain step by step procedure to deploy ODA_BASE.

GUI and startx is not working during deployment of ODA X5-2 with virtualization

This doc will help to those who are facing issue with GUI or startx not working during ODA deployment.

I experienced GUI and startx issue during deployment of Oracle Database Appliance X5-2 with Virtualization.

I had two scenario where i faced VNC issues.


1. I were able to connect to the VNC but after connecting to VNC when i executed startx, screen turned into white blank screen. like screen shot below.



2. Then i decided to initialize the deployment thru command line. During onecommand execution VNC disconnected automatically. like screen shot below.


Solution :-  Oracle Database Appliance supports TigerVNC. Pls use TigerVNC.

Create Bootable USB from Oracle Linux 7 ISO image on Windows

This doc will describe step to step procedure to create Bootable USB from Oracle Linux ISO image on Windows.

1. Download Rufus. its light weight software utility to easily create USB bootable.

2. Download the Oracle Linux ISO image from https://edelivery.oracle.com/

3. Insert the USB into Windows system. Make Sure USB has no data.

4. Run the downloaded rufus.exe file.New windows will come up like below. it will automatically detect the USB.
Keep all default settings. Click on the CD ROM icon next to ISO image.

 5.Select the ISO image.After selecting ISO image click on Start.


 6. It will ask to write as ISO image mode or DD image mode. Go for default ISO image mode.

 7.There will be warning, USB will be formatted. Click on ok.
 8. Keep watching the processing.



9. Once its done. There will be READY status. Click on close. Bootable USB is ready to use now.

Create Local IPS Repository on Solaris 11.3 on virtual box

This document describe the procedure to create the local IPS repo on Oracle Solaris 11.3 on virtual box.
By default Solaris have configure with default repo. if we do not have access to the internet to update the required packages we need to create local repo at server level.
To setup  the local repo, we need to download the Oracle's hosted repositories from the Oracle Technology Network.

Accept the OTN agreement license and download the available repositories.


I have already downloaded the repo's and i already created the ISO file to merge them. so i will skip that steps.

Select the machine and goto the storage tab and select he ISO file.



Check the ISO under /media dir.

 root@oracle123:~# ls -l  /media/
total 4
dr-xr-xr-x   3 root     root        2048 Mar  3 00:19 SOL-11_3_REPO

Check the current publisher.

root@oracle123:~# pkg publisher
PUBLISHER                   TYPE     STATUS P LOCATION
solaris                     origin   online F http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/

Set new publisher. path will be same under /media directory.

root@oracle123:~# pkg set-publisher  -G '*' -g file:///media/SOL-11_3_REPO/repo/ solaris

Make sure system repository service pointing to the local repo.

root@oracle123:~# svccfg -s application/pkg/server setprop pkg/inst_root=/media/SOL-11_3_REPO/repo

Verify local pointing repo.

root@oracle123:~# svcprop -p pkg/inst_root application/pkg/server

/media/SOL-11_3_REPO/repo

Reload the repo service.

root@oracle123:~# svcadm refresh application/pkg/server

Check again if its new publisher.

root@oracle123:~# pkg publisher
PUBLISHER                   TYPE     STATUS P LOCATION
solaris                     origin   online F file:///media/SOL-11_3_REPO/repo/

Try to install the packages.

root@oracle123:~# pkg install SUNWhea
           Packages to install:  1
       Create boot environment: No
